IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS FOR NEW FEDERAL DIRECT LOAN BORROWERS

Electronic Master Promissory Note (eMPN)
PLEASE READ: This information was prepared for students who do not have a valid electronic Master Promissory Note (MPN) on file with the Department of Education. If you signed the Federal Direct Loan MPN (either the electronic or paper version) in a previous year and that promissory note is currently valid, you are not required to sign again. Click here to view the Frequently Asked Questions.

The Electronic Master Promissory Note is a promissory note that can be used to borrow one or more Direct Loans for one or more academic years (up to 10 years).

The signature requirement is a two-step process that is performed on two separate websites. TO MEET THE SIGNATURE REQUIREMENT...

YOU MUST FULLY COMPLETE STEP #1 AND STEP #2

Note: You will need your Department of Education Personal Identification Number (PIN) to complete both of the steps outlined below. This is the same PIN that you utilize to sign your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If you do not know your PIN, visit the PIN website at www.pin.ed.gov.

Step #1 ENTRANCE LOAN COUNSELING - Entrance Counseling will help you understand your Direct Loan. To complete the entrance counseling tutorial and quiz, access the Department of Education Entrance Counseling website at http://www.dl.ed.gov. The link will open a new window and still leave this window open. Once you have completed the quiz, your results will be electronically forwarded to Student Financial Aid from Direct Loans.

Step #2 ELECTRONICALLY SIGN YOUR PROMISSORY NOTE - To electronically sign, you must access the Department of Education website at http://dlenote.ed.gov. The signature process is completed once you can view the screen that indicates SUCCESS! Now Print Your MPN. This screen will appear after you have completed all the steps for eMPN signing

Your Electronic Master Promissory Note will be automatically forwarded to the Student Financial Aid Office from Direct Loans within 5-7 business days from date of signing.
