Grade Level Change

Q. After the fall semester, I will be a sophomore. Can I receive additional loans?
A. The Student Financial Aid office will evaluate your eligibility for both subsidized and unsubsidized loans based on your grade level and degree program. This also applies for changing grade level from sophomore to junior level.

If you have a grade level change mid-year, you must complete the Federal Direct Request Form in order to be evaluated again. This must be your official grade level in FlashLine.

Dropping a Course

Q. If I drop a course, how will this affect my financial aid?
A. Students who add or drop courses during the 100% refund period for that term will see their tuition charges and aid adjust based on their registered classes.

Students who drop courses during another refund period (80% -60%) may be subject to still pay for a portion of a dropped course based on the date the drop was processed. Your financial aid (including scholarships) may be reduced or cancelled depending on your new enrollment status.

Your financial aid (including scholarships) may be reduced or cancelled depending on your new enrollment status. Withdrawing from a class can also adversely affect your financial aid status. Grades of W can affect your aid for future terms or years. Carefully review the Standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress to ensure you are staying on track to retain aid eligibility. Students who become eligible to receive financial aid or accept aid after withdrawing from a course will have their aid adjusted based on their remaining course enrollment.

Pell Grant amounts

Q. My Spring Pell Grant is not crediting to my account correctly. I should be eligible for more based on my Spring enrollment however, only a partial amount appeared on my bill. Will I receive the full amount awarded?
A. Students who are eligible for a Federal Pell Grant and are enrolled in SUMMER classes are required to use their Pell Grant. Students who use a portion of their Pell Grant in the summer may have their Pell Grant reduced for the spring semester. Review your FlashLine account after your summer aid application is processed for adjustments to your Pell Grant as a result of a summer Pell Grant award.

Bursar Bill

Q. How do I view my financial aid on my e-bill and current account balance?
A. Any awarded financial aid will be listed on your e-bill under Estimated Financial Aid and on your Account Detail under the My Account tab in FlashLine. See the link to the document below provided by the Bursar's Office for further details on how to view your e-bill and current account balance online. You may also contact the Bursar's Office at (330) 672-2626 if you have difficulty understanding your e-bill or online account summary.

Transferring to Kent

Q. I am transferring to KSU in the Spring. How much is my Financial Aid?
A. Be sure to include the Kent State school code on your FAFSA (003051). Allow 2-3 weeks for us to upload your results, assess your eligibility and award your aid. We will not award students until they have been accepted to KSU, completed Verification (if selected), and their FAFSA was successfully submitted.

Transferring to Another School

Q. I am leaving KSU for another school. What do I need to do about financial aid?
A. 1. Call our office to cancel your remaining aid. 2. Go online to your FAFSA and add the new school code. 3. Contact your new school regarding your financial aid awards at that institution.

Accessing your Financial Aid Information Online

Q. How do I view my financial aid awards online?
A. (1.) Log FlashLine and select the "My Account" tab
(2.) Under Financial Aid click on "My Financial Aid"
(3.) Click on "Award", then "Financial Aid Awards"
(4.) Select the current aid year and click "Submit", then "Award Overview"
(5.) Select "Award Messages" or click on each award to read more information.

Incoming Freshman Scholarships

Q. What university scholarships are available to incoming freshmen and how do I apply?
A. You can find the list of scholarships available to incoming freshmen under the Scholarships tab of our Web site or follow the link below. Incoming freshmen will be automatically considered for freshmen scholarships at the Kent Campus by submitting a complete Admissions Application to the University by January 15th.

Scholarship recipients will be notified by letter. The Student Financial Aid office will begin sending these letters to scholarship recipients in November of the students senior year in high school. Letters will continue being sent out until early February for those students who have applied by January 15th.

FAFSA

Q. When is the deadline to complete the FAFSA?
A. The priority processing deadline for the Kent State Student Financial Office is December 1, 2016 for the 2017-2018 academic year. To ensure maximum financial aid eligibility, complete the FAFSA no later than February 1, 2017. Students applying for financial aid for the 2016-2017 academic year should complete their FAFSA immediately for the Fall 2016 or Spring 2017 semesters. The priority deadline for 2016-2017 was March 1, 2016.

Office Hours

Q. What are the Student Financial Aid Office hours?
A. Our office is open from 8am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. Appointments are not necessary. A walk-in counselor is available to meet with you in-person and our phone counselors are available during business hours. We remain open during winter & spring breaks. The Student Financial Aid website is always available 24/7 to provide in depth Financial Aid information and assistance.

FAFSA

Q. What is the web address to file the FAFSA online and when can I submit it?
A. The FAFSA can be filed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Students will be able to file a 20172018 FAFSA as early as October 1, 2016, rather than beginning on January 1, 2017. You may find additional information on our website. http://www.kent.edu/financialaid/fafsa

Academic Progress (AP) and Financial Aid

Q. I was notified I have been cited for academic progress (AP). Does this mean I cannot receive financial aid?
A. If a student has been cited for AP, the student cannot receive federal aid.

First, check your "Active Messages" on FlashLine. To do this, follow these steps:

(1.) Log into FlashLine and select the "My Account" tab
(2.) Under Financial Aid click on "Financial Aid Status"
(3.) Select the current aid year and click "Submit"
(4.) Review any unsatisfied "Student Requirements" and click the "Instructions" box for further information, if applicable.
(5.) Review any "Active Messages"

Complete the form indicated in the active message and submit any required documentation to support your appeal. Within 4-weeks of receiving the appeal, the AP committee will review the appeal and the student will be notified of the decision via FlashLine, under "Active Messages". If you attend a regional Kent campus, please send your appeal form to that campus.

If the financial aid was awarded prior to the citation, the aid will not transfer unless the AP appeal is approved. If the financial aid was not awarded prior to citation and the AP appeal is approved, the financial aid will be awarded when the approval is complete.

Verification

Q. My Student Aid Report (SAR) indicates that I have been selected for a process called verification. What documents do I need to submit?
A. If you are required to submit verification forms, our Student Financial Aid Office will contact you by your Kent State email. You will NOT need to submit any documents to Kent State University UNLESS you receive a specific Verification Letter from our Kent State University Student Financial Aid Office.

If you have received this email from the Student Financial Aid Office, required documentation include, but is not limited to, the Verification Worksheet, the student's Federal IRS Tax Transcript from the IRS and W-2 form (if requested), and the parent's Federal IRS Tax Transcript from the IRS and W-2 forms (if requested). An IRS Tax Transcript can be obtained by visiting www.irs.gov or by calling 1-800-908-9946. Additional documentation may be requested depending on the student's specific situation. Typically, students can expect to receive notification that they were selected for verification within 10-14 business days after the Student Financial Aid Office receives the student's FAFSA results from the federal processor.

Student Aid Report

Q. I received my Student Aid Report (SAR) from the Federal Processor. What do I do now?
A. Review all the information on the SAR to make sure it is correct. In order to be considered for aid from Kent State, be sure you listed the Kent campus Federal School Code 003051. If your information is correct, keep the SAR for your records. If it is incorrect, you can make corrections on-line.

Special Circumstances Applications

Q. When will Special Circumstance Applications be available for the 2016-2017 academic year?
A. Special Circumstance Applications for the 2016-2017 year are available as of April 1, 2016.

The Special Circumstance Application for the 2015-2016 year will be available to complete until February 1, 2016.

Continuing Student - Financial Aid Results

Q. I am a returning student and have filed a FAFSA, when will I hear about my financial aid?
A. We begin to notify continuing students via their kent.edu e-mail address in early - mid April that their Financial Aid Awards for fall/spring are accessible via Flashline.

Incoming Freshman - Financial Aid Results

Q. I am an incoming freshman and have already filed the FAFSA. When will I hear about my financial aid (after January1)?
A. We will begin mailing Financial Aid Award letters for incoming freshmen by mid-March.

Refund Checks

Q. When will I receive my refund check?
A. By federal regulation, financial aid disburses 10 days before the start of each semester. To determine the amount of your refund and when it will process, please refer to your FlashLine Bursar's Account or contact the Bursar's Office for all questions regarding refunds.
