Award Letter Program/Message Codes

The 2007-2008 Student Financial Aid Award Letter mailed to a student describes the financial aid offered for the award year (Summer 2007/Fall 2007/Spring 2008). The following table describes the Program Message Codes found on your award letter:

8TH 8TH
This award is for a total of eight semesters provided GPA and enrollment renewal requirements are met.
ABL ATHLETIC BOOK LOAN
Present your FLASHcard at the University Bookstore cash register and state that you are using an Athletic Book Loan. At the end of the semester, books must be returned to the University Bookstore by 4 p.m. the Saturday following finals week.
AC1 FEDERAL ACADEMIC COMPETITIVENESS GRANT (For first-year students)
This program requires the student to be a U.S. citizen and have freshman standing (maximum 29.99 earned credit hours). The student must have completed high school after Jan. 1, 2006, and must have completed a rigorous program of study in high school. Additionally, the student must be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant, be enrolled full time in a degree program and must maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA at Kent State University. The maximum grant amount is $750 per academic year ($375 per semester) for first-year students. The ACG will be reduced if the student is not demonstrating sufficient financial need.
AC2 FEDERAL ACADEMIC COMPETITIVENESS GRANT (For second-year students)
This program requires the student to be a U.S. citizen and have sophomore standing (maximum 30-59.99 earned credit hours). The student must have completed high school after Jan. 1, 2005, and must have completed a rigorous program of study in high school. Additionally, the student must be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant, be enrolled full time in a degree program and must maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA at Kent State University. The maximum grant amount is $1,300 per academic year ($650 per semester) for second- year students. The ACG will be reduced if the student is not demonstrating sufficient financial need.

This scholarship is for board (food). You must have a board plan to use this award.
BOK BOOKSTORE
Present your FLASHcard at the University Bookstore cash register and state you are using a book award.
FDL FEDERAL DIRECT LOAN (WILLIAM D. FORD - SUBSIDIZED AND UNSUBSIDIZED)
The Subsidized Federal Direct Loan is awarded to students who demonstrate financial need. The Unsubsidized Federal Direct Loan is awarded to students who do not demonstrate financial need. Interest will accrue on unsubsidized loans and will be capitalized unless the student chooses to pay the interest while in school. All Kent State University students who complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be awarded the Federal Direct Loan based on their eligibility. If the students do not want to borrow the Direct Loan, they must notify the Student Financial Aid Office. For information on interest rates, origination fees and repayment, visit the Student Financial Aid Web site at www.sfa.kent.edu. Repayment begins six months after the student graduates or ceases to be enrolled at least half time each semester. The Master Promissory Note (MPN) must be signed and on file with Direct Loans in order to receive the loan funs or students may sign an electronic MPN. Information and links for electronic MPN signatures can be found at the Student Financial Aid Web site www.sfa.kent.edu. Students must use their Department of Education (FAFSA) PIN to sign an electronic MPN. If the MPN was signed in a previous year and that note is current, the loan funds will automatically transfer. FDP FEDERAL DIRECT PARENT LOAN
This amount indicates parent eligibility for the Federal Direct Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS). The Student Financial Aid Office has received the PLUS Pre-Application and has forwarded the information to the Direct Loan Origination Center for credit evaluation.
FED TITLE IV (SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY GRANT)
This aid is provided by the federal government and is subject to all eligibility criteria. The availability of funds for selected programs is determined by the federal government and/or Kent State University.
FPE FEDERAL DIRECT PARENT LOAN ESTIMATE
This amount indicates an estimate of what a parent may borrow from the Federal Direct Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS). The Federal Direct PLUS loan allows parents of dependent students to borrow up to the cost of education less other financial aid, including any Federal Direct Loan the student may be eligible to receive. The variable interest rate will not exceed 9 percent. Repayment normally begins 60 days after funds have fully disbursed. PLUS loan borrowers are subject to a credit check as part of the loan approval process. A 4 percent loan origination fee will be deducted from each disbursement. To apply for the PLUS loan, the parent borrower must complete and return the PLUS Pre-Application located on the back of the Financial Aid Award Letter. Upon receipt of a positive credit acknowledgement, you will receive a promissory note that must be signed by the parent and returned to the Student Financial Aid Office or you may sign an electronic MPN at the Direct Loan Web site http://dlenote.ed.gov. You will need your Department of Education Personal Identification Number (PIN) to sign an electronic PLUS MPN. This amount will remain estimated until a completed PLUS pre-application is returned. Money from the PLUS loan will be applied to the student’s Bursar account only after the credit check is approved and a completed promissory note is submitted (either electronically or paper). If the credit decision is negative, you will be sent additional information regarding alternative options in the Federal Student Loan Program.
FWS FEDERAL WORK-STUDY
Students earn this award through hourly employment that should begin within the first six weeks of the semester, or the award may be canceled. The FWS award cannot be deducted from the university bill since a student will receive a bi-weekly pay check. GIA ATHLETIC GRANT-IN-AID
This award can affect your eligibility for other types of financial aid. All student athletes must complete and return the Athletic Outside Resources Declaration form each year. If you have not received these documents, please contact the Student Financial Aid Office.
GWS GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP WORK-STUDY ESTIMATE
You have been evaluated for a Federal Work-Study funded Graduate Assistantship. If you are hired, the award will be made actual upon receipt of a copy of the Offer of Graduate Appointment. This award may reduce your student loan.
NBG NEED BASED GRANT
This institutional grant requires the student to demonstrate financial need, which is determined by the results of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This award is not renewable.
NBS NEED BASED SCHOLARSHIP
This institutional scholarship requires the student to demonstrate financial need, which is determined by the results of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To be considered for this award for the next academic year, you must complete the FAFSA for the following academic year, and demonstrate financial need. This award is not automatically renewable.
OCG OHIO COLLEGE OPPORTUNITY GRANT
This grant is available to new undergraduate Ohio resident students who first enroll in an undergraduate program beginning in the 2006-2007 academic year. Eligibility is based on financial data taken from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and applied according to a formula determined by the Federal Department of Education. The grant varies according to the number of credit hours enrolled per semester. If this amount is an Ohio College Opportunity Grant Estimate (OCGE), your award will not become actual until the Ohio Board of Regents has certified your eligibility. The OCGE must be applied to tuition only, and may not exceed the cost of tuition.
OGE OHIO NATIONAL GUARD SCHOLARSHIP
This amount is an estimate of the Ohio National Guard Scholarship. The actual award will not be credited to your account until your name appears on the official roster from the State of Ohio Adjutant General’s Department, prior to the start of each semester. To receive an actual award, you must have an approval letter from the State of Ohio Adjutant General’s Department for the semester in which you are requesting benefits. You must provide a copy of this approval letter to the Student Financial Aid Office. If you have exhausted your eligibility, have missed the scholarship deadline, or are not enrolled at least 6 credit hours each semester, you will not receive an actual award.
OIG OHIO INSTRUCTIONAL GRANT
This grant is for undergraduate Ohio residents who are attending school full time (12 hours or more). The award is based on data received from the Ohio Board of Regents. The OIG can be applied to tuition only. You may receive this award for a maximum of ten semester hours including the summer semester. If this amount is an Ohio Instructional Grant Estimate, your award will not become actual until the Ohio Board of Regents has certified your eligibility. If you receive scholarships from Ohio War Orphans, National Guard, or ROTC that cover part or all of tuition, your OIG eligibility will be reduced or cancelled.
OPT PART-TIME STUDENT INSTRUCTIONAL GRANT
This grant is for eligible undergraduate Ohio residents who are enrolled less than full time (11 hours or less). OIGPT applies to tuition only and may not exceed the cost of tuition. Ohio Board of Regents determines the availability of funds for this program.
PEL FEDERAL PELL GRANT
This grant is for undergraduate students based on financial data taken from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and applied according to a formula determined by the Federal Department of Education. The grant varies according to the number of credit hours enrolled per semester.
PNR PROMISSORY NOTE REQUIRED (PERKINS/NURSING LOAN)
Awards are based on financial need and the amount of funds available to the university. Applicants who meet the March 1 priority deadline will receive preference for these funds. You must be enrolled at least 6 credit hours per semester. Repayment begins 9 months after you graduate or cease to be enrolled at least half-time. No interest is charged while you are in school or during the 9 month grace period after you terminate enrollment. During repayment, interest accrues at the rate of 5 percent per annum on the unpaid balance.
PRO PRESIDENT’S AWARD
This award can be renewed. You may receive it for a total of eight semesters provided you comply with renewal criteria. You must be a non-Ohio resident. If you have other aid that covers nonresident tuition, this award will be deleted.
RES RESOURCE
This is an estimate of resources for which you may be eligible and is based on information provided to the Student Financial Aid Office. Please indicate in writing if this resource will not be received.
ROM ROOM
This scholarship is to be used for on-campus housing and is based on a standard double room. You must live on campus to receive this scholarship.
SCH SCHOLARSHIP
This award may be deleted after spring grades are published if renewal criteria are not met.
SFA NCAA SPECIAL ASSISTANCE FUND
Your application has been approved. The funds have been credited to your account at the Bursar’s Office.
SMT FEDERAL NATIONAL SCIENCE AND MATHMATICS FOR RETAINED TALENT (SMART) GRANT
This program requires the students to be a U.S. citizens, have a junior standing (at least 60 earned credit hours), or a senior standing (at least 90 earned credit hours, maximum of 119.99 earned credit hours), be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant and be enrolled full-time in an eligible major degree program. Therefore, if you change your major you may render yourself ineligible for this grant. The maximum grant amount is $4,000 per academic year ($2,000 per semester), but will be reduced if the student is not demonstrating sufficient financial need.
TUT TUITION
This award is to be used for tuition only. You may receive this award for a total of eight semesters if renewal criteria are met. If you have another award that covers tuition, this award will be canceled.
UWE UNIVERSITY FEE WAIVER ESTIMATE
Please indicate in writing to the Student Financial Aid Office if this award will not be received.
